Enterocytozoon bieneusi meronts in a Giensa stained smear of Enterocytes. This parasite causes intestinal microsporidiosis in patients with AIDS resulting in intractable diarrhoea. Within the host cell, it undergoes binary fission (merogony as seen here), multiple fission(schizogony) and spore production (sporogony). PAS stains are also useful while EM examination is the gold standard for determining to species level.
